Dear Guest,
How ‘Cultural Intelligence’ brings success in International Business.
In our May edition, we shared the story of a particularly delicate recruitment project we handled a few years ago, which highlighted the very real issue of ‘Cultural Gaps when Recruiting in Asia.’ (link here: Talent Soptlight May).
We received a lot of feedback and anecdotes in response, and many of you shared your own cross-cultural ‘surprises’ encountered during your professional career journeys. One particularly striking example came from someone in the construction industry: “I had marked all the spots where digging was forbidden, but instead they thought that was… the target. Too late!”
As September brings with it family relocations and many international job transitions, we thought now would be the perfect time to take a broader look at the intercultural topic -especially as it’s a topic that organizations (and ourselves?) sometimes treat a bit too lightly.
For organizations that continue to expand across borders, work across time zones, and intertwine different corporate & national cultures through M&As, mobility programs or simply international teams dynamics, one question consistently emerges from our training & coaching engagements:
"How do we make it work when we don’t think, speak, or lead the same way?"
The answer? Cultural Intelligence. Not as a buzzword. But as a practical, business-critical skillset.
Culture: Invisible, Yet Powerful
We may not see it, but our cultural background shows up in everything — how we give feedback, speak up in meetings, approach deadlines, make decisions, or even in how we disagree. Our cultural background is shaped by national and regional norms, yes — but who we are, is also shaped by our upbringing, education, industry habits, job culture and corporate cultures. And while each person is unique, patterns & trends do emerge, especially when teams span geographies.
At Timeo, we’ve seen these challenges play out over and over: - A leader relocating to a new market and suddenly struggling with unexpected silence in meetings
- A cross-border team project stalling due to mismatched expectations around deadlines or conflict
- A promising M&A integration derailed not by strategy, but by misunderstandings around hierarchy and trust-building
In fact, a key factor for M&A failures (up to 70-90% depending on the research from Accenture of Mckinsey) are related to cultural reasons. For international M&A’s a large portion of failures are due to national cultural differences affecting the integration. These aren’t rare exceptions. They’re normal & predictable — so they are solvable.
3 Critical Moments Where Culture Can Make or Break Success
1. International Mobility
Relocation is more than a logistics exercise. When a leader lands in a new country, they also land in a new mental landscape. Helping them decode the cultural cues — how to lead, connect, and build trust locally — is the difference between a successful integration or a lonely disengagement. One Timeo Intercultural Coachee, shared how understanding the indirect communication style in Japanese culture helped him turn his frustration into curiosity, unpick what is NOT being said - and ultimately, develop deeper team collaboration.
2. Cross-Cultural Teams & Clients
International collaboration requires more than fluent English. It takes awareness of how people give and receive feedback, express disagreement, or define ‘urgent’.
In our training workshops, managers often say: “I had no idea that being ‘direct’ might be seen as disrespectful — or that silence could mean disagreement.”... Actually a “Yes” can also be a disagreement in the Asian Region, depending on the context of conversation. That moment of self-reflection is where collaboration begins.
3. Mergers & Acquisitions
Culture clash is one of the top reasons M&As underperform or fail. Integrating systems is easy; integrating ways of thinking and working is the real challenge. Whether French-Indian, American-Singaporean, or German-Chinese, at Timeo we’ve supported post-merger leaders to build shared trust & collaborative practical solutions while respecting local identities.
So, What Is Cultural Intelligence?
It’s not about stereotyping, it is underpinned with practical and measurable logic, skills, and techniques for awareness, adaptability, and intention.
At Timeo, we define it as the ability to: - Recognize and adapt cultural patterns (yours and others’)
- Stay curious and open, rather than closed and judgmental
- Flex and adapt your communication and leadership style appropriately
And the best part? It can be learned and put in practice.
A Final Word
Cultural intelligence isn’t purely a soft skill. It’s strategic and practical. In a world where business is global but we as people are local, knowing how to navigate culture is your edge — whether you're selling to international clients, managing mobility, leading diverse & international teams, or navigating a merger.
